Born and raised in Poland, multidisciplinary artist Karolina Sato has long lived in Tokyo. She delights in immersing herself in Japanese culture, voraciously reading, and the pleasures of the changing seasons.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I love learning languages. I speak Polish, Japanese, and English fluently.
Do you have a favorite color?
According to the Chinese horoscope, my lucky color is gold. I like using gold in my artwork.
What is your preferred beverage?
I like both coffee and tea, depending on my mood. Coffee is best black, hand-dripped brewed with water from an iron pot. As for tea, my recent favorites are Rose green tea and peach white tea.
What is your bucket list trip?
I want to explore nature on horseback, either in the stunning Faroe Islands, which are very far away and sparsely populated, or on a Wild West-style quest because I would like to be a cowgirl for a bit.
What is your secret power?
I have a powerful imagination. I am afraid to swim in open waters because of underwater monsters.
Have you had any brushes with fame?
I have met Lady Gaga and the Emperor of Japan.
Do you have a favorite ritual?
I have a lunch date with my husband every day. We often dine out at our five favorite restaurants in the neighborhood.
